Disable Meet tab in Gmail app on Android and iOS

A few days ago, Google integrated its Meet video conference platform into the Gmail application on both Android and iOS. Each user can see a large tab on the bottom side that displays both Messages and Meet.

This is one of Google's way to attract users' attention to participate in Meet and make it easier to make video calls in the office, and this may be annoying to some.

While Google Meet has become somewhat more popular since Google made it free for a limited time, it does not.

It compares with the Zoom video conferencing app in terms of capabilities.

It is for this reason that perhaps they decided to put an update to draw users' attention to the possibility of video conferencing. It seems that they did not give much thought to this tab and rushed to put it there to attract users to use it.

But they wanted the Meet tab to be front and center, even if it was taking up a large portion of the UI.

If you don't use Meet or don't plan to use it, that's kind of annoying.

There is a way to disable it on both Android and iOS. Just follow these steps.

On Android:

  1. Inside Gmail, click on the three-line hamburger menu in the upper left corner.
  2. Scroll down and then click on the "Settings" option.
  3. Once opened, click on the account in which you do not want to see the "Meet" tab.
  4. Under the "Meet" subsection, disable the "Show Meet tab for video calls" option.

On iOS devices:

  1. Inside Gmail, click on the three-line hamburger menu in the upper left corner.
  2. Scroll down and then click on the "Settings" option.
  3. Once opened, click on the account in which you do not want to see the "Meet" tab.
  4. Under the “General” subsection, disable the "Show Meet tab for video calls" option.

  • You should follow these steps for each of your accounts as there is no way to disable them for all accounts at once.

What the "Meet" tab does is that it opens a new page where users can start a new meeting or join a new meeting. The video calling platform Google Meet was restricted to G Suite users until last month when Google announced that it would reach all users.

Gmail plans to add another feature to its platform - authentication logos. Google joined Brand Indicators for Message Identification or BIMI, last year to develop technology to prevent email fraud. Now, the company plans to introduce a new feature called Authentication Logos in G Suite that will add branding logos for verification.
